BAKU—During a seminar in Baku on voluntary carbon markets, Edward Evans, Deputy Head of Mission at the UK Embassy, highlighted Azerbaijan's potential to emerge as a leading green energy hub in the region, as reported by Trend News Agency.
According to Trend News Agency, Evans stressed the critical role of carbon pricing in driving green initiatives, noting the UK's leadership and collaborative efforts with Azerbaijan in this domain. He pointed out that the UK supports carbon markets both domestically and internationally, underscoring their significance in reducing emissions and fostering economic growth.
Evans elaborated on the UK's experience with carbon pricing, which was introduced in 2005. Since then, the UK has seen a reduction in emissions by over 40% while achieving economic expansion. This success, he suggested, demonstrates that environmental initiatives can also stimulate economic development. He expressed optimism about partnering with Azerbaijan to maximize the potential of carbon markets, thereby attracting significant investment for sustainable projects in developing regions.
The seminar, titled "Introduction to Voluntary Carbon Markets in Azerbaijan," reflects a growing interest in leveraging economic tools to address environmental challenges, positioning Azerbaijan as a potential leader in sustainable energy in the broader region.
