Baku: Those who negligently destroy cultural property in Azerbaijan will face up to two years in prison, APA reports. This development is part of a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code, which was discussed at today's session of the Milli Majlis.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the draft amendment stipulates that if the violation of established rules for the protection, study, and use of state-protected cultural property results in its destruction due to negligence, the perpetrator will be subject to a fine of up to twice the amount of the damage caused. Alternatively, they could face restriction of liberty for up to two years, or imprisonment for the same duration.

The draft law was put to a vote and was adopted in the third reading. If approved, this law will take effect on February 1, 2026.
