Baku: Participation in armed conflicts on the territory of foreign states is a grave crime, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan said in a statement, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the statement highlights ongoing investigations revealing Azerbaijani citizens' involvement in military actions, notably between Russia and Ukraine, as well as other conflicts.

The Prosecutor General's Office expressed concern over casualties among citizens involved in these conflicts, including deaths, severe injuries, and instances of being taken hostage. The Azerbaijani government underscores its commitment to protecting the lives, security, and rights of its citizens, emphasizing the inevitability of legal consequences for those violating national laws.

Participation in foreign armed conflicts is classified as a grave crime under Azerbaijani law and certain international conventions. The Criminal Code of Azerbaijan defines mercenary activities, participation in unauthorized armed groups, and similar actions as crimes punishable by imprisonment ranging from 8 to 20 years or life imprisonment.

The statement urges citizens to refrain from joining foreign armed formations, regardless of motivations, and warns of legal repercussions. Azerbaijan's law enforcement agencies have initiated criminal proceedings against individuals engaged in such activities, with some cases already resulting in long-term imprisonment. Ongoing investigations continue for other related cases.

The government reiterates the constitutional duty of Azerbaijani citizens to adhere to national laws and prioritize national interests over personal gains. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant, avoid illegal activities, and uphold the moral and legal responsibilities as prescribed by law.
