Baku: Azerbaijan has experienced a significant increase in sea freight transport during the first quarter of 2025, with a total of 2.21 million tons of cargo moved, registering a 14.2% rise compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this growth in sea freight is primarily driven by oil cargo, which made up 46.8% of the total volume transported.
Additionally, the country’s seaports have been bustling with activity, handling 3.4825 million tons of cargo loading and unloading operations from January to March. Of these, 2.8809 million tons, or 82.7%, were transit shipments, indicating a robust transit trade through Azerbaijani ports.
Despite the increase in cargo transport, the number of passengers traveling by sea has decreased. The data shows a 4.8% annual decline in sea passenger numbers, with only 5,900 people transported. As of April 1, 2025, a total of 178,000 tons of cargo remained at the ports, awaiting further transit or unloading.
