Shamkir: Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance the country's livestock farming sector, aiming for a 10% increase in milk production and a 20% boost in beef output by 2030. The initiative was discussed at a regional meeting in Shamkir, focusing on the 'State Program for 2026-2030 on the Development of Agricultural, Fisheries and Aquaculture Production and Processing Sectors in the Republic of Azerbaijan.'
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ilhama Gadimova outlined key objectives that include raising the share of pedigree animals in herds, reducing reliance on imports, and boosting self-sufficiency. The strategy targets a 49.6% reduction in milk imports and a 40.2% decrease in beef imports, with self-sufficiency levels expected to rise by 8.5% for milk and 11.5% for beef.
To achieve these targets, the program plans to establish dairy and meat clusters, create nearly 1,000 new farms, and support the provision of pedigree breeding animals. The development of production and supply chains will be facilitated by establishing 90 milk collection points and 15 hide collection points.
Animal identification is emphasized as crucial for disease control, breeding activities, and subsidy transparency. The provision of equipment and technologies for feed production is also a pivotal aspect, as productivity is linked to the quality of the feed base.
The program envisions introducing subsidies for pedigree animals and livestock products to encourage farmers to enhance their productivity. Additionally, by 2030, sheep meat production is projected to increase by 9%, livestock numbers by 10%, and exports to reach 2.9 thousand tons, with a 7% improvement in self-sufficiency.
Plans also include the establishment of 300 new semi-intensive sheep farms, 10 wool collection points, and a wool processing enterprise to create added value in the sector. The restoration of 480,000 hectares of pastures and grazing lands is vital for sustainable livestock farming, alongside the drilling of 100 artesian wells to ensure water supply for animals.
The establishment of an agropark aims to attract foreign investment, fostering development through modern management and technology. The State Program emphasizes the role of entrepreneurs and the private sector, highlighting investment opportunities in various agricultural infrastructure and facilities.
The program's successful implementation relies on enhancing productivity through efficient land use, leveraging the region's resources, and fostering collaboration among all stakeholders. The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to engage with stakeholders to address challenges and maximize the program's impact.
