CAIRO — Azerbaijan is set to embark on an ambitious plan to implement 7 gigawatts of green energy projects by 2030, aiming to establish itself as a leader in the regional transition to sustainable energy.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced the initiative at a panel meeting in Baku, held as part of the UN's Preliminary Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (Pre-COP29). He detailed that the strategy includes the creation of green energy zones in Karabakh, which will underpin the country's efforts to achieve net zero emissions. "Of this, 70% will be exported. These green energy corridors will make a significant contribution to the green energy transition from Central Asia to Europe," Shahbazov stated.

The minister also highlighted Azerbaijan's role as the first country in the region to host COP29, noting that the presidency will focus on increasing financial flows and removing barriers to accelerate the global energy transition. The country's efforts are aligned with the new agreements under the Paris Agreement, particularly the implementation of its Article 6, which pertains to voluntary cooperation in the implementation of national contributions.
