Azerbaijan Targets Zero Carbon Emissions, Requires $40 Billion Investment by 2060

BAKU: Azerbaijan has committed to an ambitious environmental goal of achieving zero carbon emissions, with plans to cut emissions by 40 percent by 2040. The World Bank estimates that the nation will need approximately $40 billion in investments to meet these objectives by 2060, aiming to address global climate change challenges while promoting economic development and enhancing energy security.

According to Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan, which contributes 0.13 percent to global carbon emissions, is taking significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint through various sustainable projects and modernization initiatives. The country supports the global fight against climate change and has ratified international agreements such as the Paris Agreement. Zero carbon emissions involve completely eliminating greenhouse gases from human activities, a target that Azerbaijan intends to achieve through a combination of emission reduction and carbon sequestration.

The nation’s geographical advantages favor the d
evelopment of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power. The government is actively promoting and investing in solar power plants across various regions and exploring wind energy opportunities along the Caspian Sea coast. Additionally, efforts are underway to optimize energy consumption and modernize industrial plants to enhance energy production efficiency.

Forestry plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, with initiatives aimed at increasing and restoring forest cover to absorb more carbon dioxide. Azerbaijan is also focusing on the transportation sector, promoting electric vehicles and modernizing public transport systems to decrease reliance on private vehicles.

The transition to zero carbon emissions is seen as vital for maintaining ecological balance, fostering economic growth, and ensuring energy security. This ambitious environmental strategy requires collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and the community, along with innovative approaches and effective impleme
ntation of planned projects.
