Next Phase of Lachin District Revitalization to Focus on Infrastructure and Renewable Energy


LACHIN DISTRICT: The next phase of revitalization efforts in Azerbaijan’s Lachin district is poised to begin next spring, focusing on the restoration of residences, roadways, and the introduction of renewable energy solutions, according to statements made during the Caspian Construction Week.

According to Trend News Agency, Tofig Islamov, the acting executive director of the Restoration, Construction, and Management Service in Lachin district, detailed the upcoming projects at a panel discussion in Baku. Islamov emphasized that the forthcoming phase is part of the broader “Great Return” initiative, which has successfully resettled more than 846 families, or over 3,000 individuals, and rehabilitated 226 dwellings in its preliminary phase. The next stage will concentrate on enhancing local infrastructure and boosting the district’s appeal to tourists and potential residents.

Design efforts for the next stage are currently underway with completion expected by early next year. The focus will be on developing re
sidential areas, roadways, tourist sites, hotels, and apartment complexes. Additionally, the introduction of new industrial facilities aims to create significant employment opportunities.

A major component of the revitalization involves the adoption of renewable energy technologies. Islamov highlighted the installation of solar panels and hybrid solar lamps, which are part of the district’s commitment to environmental sustainability under the COP29 strategy. Currently, solar panels have been installed in 24 homes and solar collectors in 90 homes. Moreover, the villages of Zabukh and Sus along with two schools and administrative buildings have seen similar installations.

The Lachin district also houses eleven small hydropower plants that collectively generate over 80 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, saving more than 20 million cubic meters of natural gas and preventing the emission of over 32 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.
