Ankara: Azerbaijan is set to commence the transportation of natural gas to Syria on August 1 through the Kilis pipeline via Trkiye, marking a significant development in the reconstruction efforts in Syria.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, which cites Turkish media, this initiative aims to contribute to the restoration of Syria’s damaged electrical infrastructure and bolster Trkiye’s ambition to become a regional energy hub.
Preparations for this energy project have been completed under a recently signed agreement between the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Syrian government. Initially, 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be sent to Syria annually. The gas will transit through the city of Kilis on the Turkish border, eventually reaching power plants in Aleppo and Homs for electricity generation. This endeavor targets a production capacity of approximately 1,200-1,300 megawatts.
As part of a working visit by the Transitional President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, to Azerbaijan on July 12, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SOCAR and the Syrian government. The agreement was formalized by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of the SOCAR Supervisory Board Mikayil Jabbarov and Syria’s Minister of Energy, Mohammed al-Bashir.
