Azerbaijan to Enhance Irrigation in Liberated Territories with Modern Technologies

Zangilan: Azerbaijan is set to supply 80,000 hectares in its liberated territories with irrigation water, as part of a strategic initiative under the 'State Program for 2026-2030 on the Production and Processing of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Products.' This program, approved by the President, focuses on expanding the use of modern irrigation technologies, according to Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC, Rafiq Aslanov, during a regional meeting held in Zangilan.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rafiq Aslanov highlighted the significance of the 2 billion cubic meters of water resources available in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur for unlocking the region's agricultural potential. The restoration of several key reservoirs, including Sugovushan, Khachinchay, and the Kondalanchay series, has already enabled the irrigation of over 110,000 hectares of land. Furthermore, the newly commissioned Zabukhchay reservoir and main pipeline have enhanced water supply for more than 12,000 hectares in the Gubadli and Zangilan districts.

Projects aimed at developing the Sarsang and Bargushadchay reservoirs are underway, while plans are in place for the construction of the Hakarichay reservoir. The Giz Galasi main canal is expected to facilitate the irrigation of 12,000 hectares in the Fuzuli and Jabrayil districts, alongside improving water supply in the districts along the Araz River.

The proposed projects are designed to supply irrigation water to around 80,000 hectares of land across the districts of Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Gubadli, Lachin, and Kalbajar. Rafiq Aslanov stressed the importance of employing modern irrigation technologies such as drip and pivot systems to ensure efficient water resource usage, while also adapting crop patterns to align with available water resources.
