Azerbaijan to Host First Meeting of New Caspian Sea Commission

Rabat:Turkmenbashi President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev took part in the Caspian Environmental Summit in Turkmenistan's Awaza National Tourist Zone, where key decisions were made to address the decline in the Caspian Sea level.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the summit concluded with the signing of a decision by the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan to form a Commission. This Commission will include deputy heads of government from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and high-ranking representatives from Iran and Russia. Its aim is to identify the causes of the sea's declining levels and develop coordinated measures to mitigate the consequences.

The Commission will set up specialized working groups with experts from the Caspian littoral countries. Each country will appoint authorized representatives within three months, and the first meeting will occur in Azerbaijan in the first half of 2027 to approve its regulations. Subsequent meetings will rotate among the littoral states in English alphabetical order.

The initiative for such a commission was proposed by President Aliyev, who highlighted the issue at the Sixth Summit of Heads of State of the Caspian Littoral States in 2022, emphasizing the urgent need for joint efforts to study and address this environmental challenge.
