BAKU: Azerbaijan is set to announce its ambitious “National Electric Mobility Plan” during the upcoming COP29, aiming to significantly boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the nation.

According to Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov detailed the strategy in a recent publication in the “Azerbaijan” newspaper. The plan will roll out in two main phases, with the first from 2024-2027 focusing on building essential infrastructure and establishing a supportive regulatory environment for electric mobility. The second phase will expand the initiative with private sector engagement and further development of the charging infrastructure post-2027.

The initial phase will see the development of foundational facilities crucial for supporting electric vehicles, including the installation of at least 77 new EV charging stations. These will be strategically placed in Baku, along major highways, and in recently liberated regions, adhering to a directive from the president to p
romote electric vehicle use. Concurrently, legislative changes are being finalized to foster this shift, involving amendments to the laws on Energy and on the Use of Renewable Energy Sources in Electricity Production.

The Ministry of Energy and its Agency for Energy Regulation are spearheading several legislative reforms and actions aimed at enhancing the energy sector’s efficiency and sustainability. This includes the introduction of bills on energy and utility services regulation and heating supply, among other significant measures. Additionally, over ten rules have been developed to govern various aspects like monitoring access to electrical networks, electricity usage, and installation safety.

The comprehensive plan also involves the launch of a Coordinating Council to oversee the implementation of the electricity market elements as Azerbaijan moves towards creating a competitive marketplace for electricity producers and suppliers.
