New York:Azerbaijan has called on countries to explicitly prohibit organizations that promote or incite racial discrimination. Shahriyar Hajiyev, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, delivered this statement at the Third Committee of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Hajiyev emphasized that states should consider participation in such groups as punishable offenses under their national laws. He highlighted that racial prejudice, often fueled by ideologies of racial superiority, poses significant threats to human lives and hinders reconciliation efforts. This form of prejudice is often perpetuated through educational materials that distort historical facts and promote hostile stereotypes, impacting children and youth.
The Constitution of Azerbaijan prohibits discrimination and guarantees equal rights and freedoms for all individuals. As a multicultural society, Azerbaijan actively fosters understanding and builds bridges among different cultures.
Azerbaijan is also the host and initiator of the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, organized biennially as part of the Baku Process initiated in 2008. The 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue is set to take place this month in Baku, aiming to promote intercultural dialogue and social inclusion, with diverse participants from across the globe.
Hajiyev reiterated Azerbaijan's commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals within its borders and contributing to international efforts to eliminate racial discrimination, fostering an environment of tolerance and mutual understanding.
