Azerbaijani Deputy Minister Urges Global Climate Adaptation Strategies at Baku Conference

BAKU — Speaking at the Climate Action Week in Baku, Umayra Taghiyeva, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, emphasized the urgent need for global adaptation to climate change, highlighting its escalating impact on the environment.

According to Trend News Agency, Taghiyeva detailed the array of challenges posed by climate change, including rising temperatures, shifting seasons, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. She advocated for comprehensive adaptation measures such as the construction of flood barriers, the establishment of early warning systems, and the adoption of drought-resistant crops, among others. These steps are crucial for nations to effectively mitigate and prepare for ongoing and future climate-related impacts.

“The adaptation efforts need to encompass everything from agricultural adjustments to policy overhauls to ensure resilience against the adverse effects of climate change,” Taghiyeva stated. She also noted that Azerbaijan is experiencing significant environmental changes, such as soil erosion, glacier melting, wetland degradation, rising sea levels, wildfires, and a decrease in water resources and wind activity, all of which are symptomatic of broader regional climate trends.

The Baku Climate Action Week, running from September 30 to October 4, 2024, serves as a precursor to the COP29 conference to be held in Baku in November. This event aims to consolidate key global stakeholders from various sectors, including politics, finance, and science, to forge actionable climate solutions. The week is structured to focus on practical climate solutions in its initial days, followed by discussions on broader cultural and educational impacts towards the end.
