BAKU: Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, who is also the COP29 President-designate, engaged in discussions with UN Special Adviser and Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Change, Selwin Hart, to address joint actions against climate change. The meeting emphasized enhancing governmental ambitions in climate planning, as reported by Trend via COP29’s page on X.

According to Trend News Agency, the dialogue between Babayev and Hart is part of the preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), scheduled to take place this November in Azerbaijan. This decision was confirmed during the plenary meeting of COP28 in Dubai on December 11 of the previous year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent hazardous human-induced changes to the climate system. COP, an acronym for Conference of Parties, serves as the pivot
al legislative body for enforcing the Framework Convention on Climate Change’s directives.

With 198 countries participating, the Convention’s parties typically convene annually unless a different arrangement is agreed upon. The inaugural COP event occurred in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany, with its secretariat based in Bonn.
