Baku: UNESCO, as an organization, is exposed to certain political manipulations during the implementation of conventions due to growing tendencies of politicization, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Elman Abdullayev, said during the panel discussion titled ‘The Role of Culture in the System of International Relations,’ held within the framework of the ‘Culture and Law: Modern Challenges Forum,’ APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the diplomat emphasized that the implementation mechanisms in UNESCO Conventions are significantly weak and, in some cases, nearly nonexistent. He noted that the increasing trend of politicization within the organization leads to certain negative consequences and highlighted the gaps in UNESCO’s mechanisms for sending missions to countries.

Elman Abdullayev further stated that cultural heritage matters must be kept entirely separate from political objectives and should unequivocally maintain a humanitarian character.
