Baku: Symptoms such as fatigue, dull pain, nausea, and vomiting observed among the population in recent days are often signs of acute gastroenteritis or viral infections commonly known among the public as 'stomach flu,' infectious disease specialist and expert of the Ministry of Health Tayyar Eyvazov said in a statement to APA. He noted that infections most commonly causing this condition are Adenovirus, Norovirus, and Rotavirus, leading to severe weakness, muscle pain, and digestive system disorders.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, some strains of seasonal respiratory viruses may also be accompanied by abdominal symptoms. Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur, particularly in hot weather, when bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus multiply rapidly in food and are consumed. To protect against infection, hygiene rules must be strictly observed. This includes washing hands frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds, thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, and paying attention to the storage conditions of meat and dairy products. It is advised to avoid close contact with sick individuals and using their personal belongings. When symptoms begin, drinking plenty of water, mineral water, or special electrolyte solutions is recommended to prevent dehydration, as there is no universal vaccine against these common gastrointestinal viruses for adults.
The rotavirus vaccine is mainly administered to infants and children. Antibiotics are not effective in viral cases. Treatment is usually symptomatic, including anti-vomiting medications, sorbents, and restoration of lost fluids. However, in cases of persistent severe vomiting, high fever, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, or serious signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, reduced urination, and dizziness, immediate medical attention should be sought.
