Baku: The Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) has sent letters to Heads of Inter-Parliamentary Relations Working Groups and Chairs of International Committees of overseas Parliaments as well as to the International Parliamentary Organisations concerning the current court trials in Azerbaijan of the persons charged with war crimes, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the letters highlight that Azerbaijan is facing an unfounded smear campaign intended to undermine the trial of several individuals accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, military aggression, acts of genocide, torture, and other grave crimes as part of Armenia’s 30-year-long military aggression against Azerbaijan.
The letters outline that false allegations concerning the trials aim to question their legitimacy. These war criminals are being misrepresented as ‘prisoners of war,’ with calls for their release, which is attributed to either a lack of understanding or a deliberate disregard for the seriousness of the situation.
The crimes against the Azerbaijani state and people, of which the defendants are accused, are detailed in the correspondence. It is emphasized that the individuals currently on trial in Azerbaijan are those who orchestrated the military aggression and occupation of Azerbaijani territories, committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. The letters stress that no individuals in Armenia have been held accountable for these crimes, and instead, Armenia continues to portray these criminals as heroes. Significant evidence regarding Armenia’s responsibility for military aggression and occupation was uncovered during the investigation.
Furthermore, the letters assert that despite unfounded accusations by some politicians, parliamentarians, and media representatives, the defendants’ right to legal representation is ensured, and they have not reported any mistreatment. The judicial proceedings are described as being conducted transparently.
In conclusion, the letters emphasize that those opposing the fair trial of war criminals in Azerbaijan are effectively supporting ethnic cleansing, occupation, and aggression. The letters affirm that peace cannot exist without justice, and justice requires ending impunity.
