Baku and Alat Emerge as Key Gateways for Central Asia-Europe Transport Flows

Baku: The Middle Corridor is rapidly becoming a pivotal component of the global logistics framework, linking transport routes between Asia and Europe via the Caspian Sea. The route is gaining strategic importance as an alternative, resilient, and flexible path for international freight transportation amidst growing geopolitical instability and disruptions in traditional supply chains.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Azerbaijan’s unique geographical positioning and stable political environment are enhancing its role in the development of the Middle Corridor. President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks at the 6th Caspian Business Forum underline the country’s strategic vision and investments in infrastructure, which are making this route increasingly appealing to companies from Europe and Asia.

Azerbaijan is positioned as more than just a transit country in the Middle Corridor logistics ecosystem. Investments in the Port of Alat and modernization of the railway system have transformed Azerbaijan into a crucial logistics hub. The country’s location at the nexus of East-West and North-South corridors provides the potential to develop into a comprehensive logistics center, with the infrastructure prepared to scale up cargo transportation volumes.

In terms of accelerating the development of the Middle Corridor, a combination of public-private partnerships, intergovernmental agreements, and consortium models is seen as the most effective approach. This model requires strong political commitment from countries along the corridor and support from European institutions like the EU’s Global Gateway initiative.

Sustainability and decarbonization are central to the strategic planning of logistics corridors like the Middle Corridor. The route, especially via Azerbaijan, could be positioned as a ‘green corridor’ by incorporating measures such as electrification and the use of renewable energy, aligning with global sustainability goals.
