Belem: An international plenary session titled ‘The Role of Prosecutor’s Offices in Climate Governance’ commenced its work within the framework of COP30 in Belem, Brazil, as reported by the Press Service of the Prosecutor General’s Office to APA. A delegation led by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Kamran Aliyev, is participating in the event.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the event was opened by Paulo Gonet, the Prosecutor General of Brazil, who highlighted the growing role of law enforcement, particularly prosecutor’s offices, in combating climate change. He stressed the significance of international collaboration in this effort and extended gratitude to Azerbaijan for successfully hosting COP29 and organizing a high-level event titled ‘Mobilization of Law Enforcement Agencies in Combating Climate Change’ during the conference.
During the plenary session, Kamran Aliyev provided insights into Azerbaijan’s efforts to combat climate change, guided by President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership. He discussed the country’s environmental protection measures, legislative improvements, and the proactive involvement of prosecutor’s offices. Aliyev also referenced President Aliyev’s remarks on the Caspian Sea’s ecological situation, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation against environmental crimes.
Aliyev further mentioned Azerbaijan’s collaboration with international organizations such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). He recalled the event on November 15, 2024, during COP29, which was attended by over 200 local and international representatives and led to the adoption of the ‘Belem Declaration.’
The Belem Declaration outlines the responsibilities of prosecutor’s offices in environmental protection, climate justice, and fostering international cooperation. Following the session, Aliyev gave interviews to Brazil’s leading television channels, discussing Azerbaijan’s experience in combating climate crimes and the importance of international cooperation.
In the interview, Aliyev highlighted the mutual trust and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Brazil at both national and prosecutorial levels. He also mentioned the ‘Baku Call to Action’ document, adopted at COP29, underscoring its and the Belem Declaration’s contributions to global climate justice and the fight against environmental crimes.
