British Ambassador Highlights Strengthened UK-Azerbaijan Ties During Farewell Speech

Baku: 'During my time here, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan have worked together through this complex geopolitical landscape to strengthen our mutual security and prosperity,' British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld said at a farewell meeting, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Ambassador Auld highlighted a significant development, announcing that in August 2025, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan agreed to elevate their relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership. This partnership is aimed at further developing their already deep, broad, and mutually trusting relationship and is based on three main pillars: defense and security, trade and investment, and innovation and education.

He shared some of his most memorable experiences, including visits to Garabagh and East Zangezur. He recalled a visit to Shusha and Lachin with the British Chamber of Commerce, noting the new developments and fresh hope he witnessed. British companies have played an active role in these developments. Chapman Taylor is offering world-class design and master planning expertise in Garabagh, Baku, and Nakhchivan. bp's 'Shafag' solar power plant project in Jabrayil is generating clean energy and jobs, contributing to the decarbonization of the Sangachal terminal.

The ambassador emphasized the importance of mine clearance activities in Garabagh, acknowledging the direct contributions of British mine action companies and NGOs, including those supported through UK government programs. Since 2022, the UK has led international efforts in mine clearance, a key focus for the embassy. Ambassador Auld also shared his personal experiences of meeting mine detection dogs and rats in Aghdam and Jabrayil, and expressed pride in supporting the involvement of women in national mine clearance teams.
