Baku: In a groundbreaking move to foster inclusivity, the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company has introduced a comprehensive range of initiatives at Baku Stadium aimed at ensuring accessibility and comfort for all attendees of the COP29 climate conference.
According to Trend News Agency, the company is prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility as part of its seven core commitments outlined in its sustainability policy. This initiative marks the first time in the history of the Conference of Parties (COP) that sign language interpretation services will be available in the COP29 Plenary Hall. In addition to these services, the venue will feature an audio induction system specifically designed for individuals with hearing and speech impairments.
The thoughtful design of the event venue includes designated zones and rooms with contrast colors to aid individuals with visual impairments. These attendees will also benefit from access to colored door signs, information boards, venue maps, and a variety of brochure
s in Braille. Impressively, many of these accessibility tools have been developed by individuals with visual impairments who reside in Azerbaijan.
To further enhance the accessibility of the event, the venue will host a dedicated accessibility information point equipped with sunflower symbol ribbons for individuals with invisible disabilities and a Braille-designed venue map. The event will also offer wheelchair maintenance services, including check-ups and technical support, along with a charging station for electric wheelchairs and spare wheelchairs available upon request.
Additional infrastructure improvements include the installation of ramps and lifts, designated parking spaces, accessible restrooms, and quiet rooms to aid the movement of individuals with physical disabilities. The venue will also feature “green crossing” zones at Pedestrian Screening Areas (PSAs) and tactile maps at entrances to the Blue and Green Zones, another first in COP event history.
The commitment to accessibility and inclusiv
ity extends beyond the venue, with participants receiving a detailed list of accessible lodging options and various transportation alternatives to facilitate seamless travel to and from the Baku Stadium.
In preparation for the event, the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company is conducting targeted training sessions for its staff, COP29 volunteers, and personnel from various service sectors. These sessions are designed to equip them with the necessary skills to assist all participants effectively, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment throughout the conference.
