Agstafa: The 'Dilbaz' Equestrian Complex in Azerbaijan's Agstafa district is dedicated to preserving the 'Dilbaz' horse breed, a national treasure of Azerbaijan. The facility is actively working to improve the breed's composition and increase its population, aligning with the government's efforts to protect the national equestrian heritage.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Agstafa facility currently houses 169 horses. The complex focuses on breeding and caring for purebred horses while preparing them for sporting competitions. Known for their agility, endurance, and adaptability to various climatic and terrain conditions, 'Dilbaz' horses have proven themselves in national sports. The 'Zafar' team, based at the complex, frequently participates in chovgan competitions, achieving notable success in multiple tournaments.

Elman Mammadov, head coach of the 'Zafar' team, highlights the unique bond 'Dilbaz' horses form with their handlers: 'These horses quickly become accustomed to their owners. An athlete takes a horse as a foal, trains it, and it learns to understand its handler's requirements, behaving accordingly. Azerbaijan boasts two main national horse breeds - 'Garabagh' and 'Dilbaz'. We are preparing seriously for upcoming competitions in the professional chovgan league.'

The complex employs specialists to monitor the physical characteristics, health, and breed traits of the horses, ensuring they are well-maintained. Shofiq Huseynov, the department head, explained that the facility provides optimal conditions for the horses' care, feeding, and training: 'Dilbaz horses are resilient to both cold and heat. Our extensive grazing areas allow mares to pasture freely, while structured feeding and training routines are in place.'

Attention to the horses' health is paramount. Each morning, the animals undergo individual checks, with their feeding and water intake closely monitored. Veterinary consultations are sought immediately if any issues arise, and new arrivals are quarantined before joining the herd.

Etibar Mammadov, the facility's livestock specialist, emphasized the importance of daily monitoring for raising healthy offspring: 'We ensure all horses are checked daily, and any problems are addressed promptly. Monitoring the quality of feed, hay, barley, and water is essential for maintaining their health.'

Since its inception in 1997, the main aim of the 'Dilbaz' Equestrian Complex has been to preserve the breed's gene pool while passing on their characteristic features to future generations. The complex's efforts, supported by state mechanisms, not only ensure the continuation of 'Dilbaz' horses in modern breeding practices but also promote their role in traditional sports like chovgan.
