Baku: Azerbaijan intends to implement green energy projects with a total capacity of 2 GW by 2027, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera said during his speech at the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the IRENA Director-General highlighted that Azerbaijan has prioritized renewable energy within its national agenda. Francesco La Camera commended the country's commitment to embedding renewable energy as a central focus, stating, "The country has the ambition to implement 2 gigawatts of green energy projects by 2027."

He further elaborated on the global renewable energy landscape, noting that a record 692 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity was achieved worldwide by 2025. By the end of 2025, renewable energy sources accounted for 49% of the global installed electricity capacity, indicating a robust shift towards sustainable energy solutions. This transition is not only a climate imperative but also an economic and strategic necessity.

La Camera emphasized that the energy transition involves more than just increasing renewable energy capacity. To build resilient and secure energy systems, investments must also focus on electricity grids, energy storage systems, digitalization, and system flexibility.

He concluded by asserting that the energy infrastructures developed this decade will have long-lasting impacts on countries' climate goals, economic competitiveness, and strategic resilience. Recent events in the Middle East have underscored the vulnerability of energy markets to disruptions, highlighting the importance of secure and adaptable energy systems.
