First-ever Double Transplant in a Single Operation in Azerbaijan

Baku: For the first time in Azerbaijan, a patient has undergone cardiovascular and kidney transplantation during the same surgical procedure, APA reports. The operation was performed at the Central Clinic Hospital.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the surgery was carried out by Central Clinic doctors, cardiologist Professor Kamran Musayev, PhD in Medicine, and transplant specialist Tariyel Nadirov. The complex operation was conducted on a 65-year-old patient who initially visited the hospital for a kidney transplant. During examinations, severe narrowing in the heart vessels and an abdominal aortic aneurysm were identified.

Taking these factors into account, the patient's cardiovascular surgery was prioritized. Professor Kamran Musayev performed an aortocoronary bypass surgery on the patient, a procedure designed to restore blood flow to the heart by connecting arteries or veins to the blocked coronary artery. The operation was successfully completed, and the patient was subsequently monitored by a nephrologist and a cardiologist.

Two months later, the patient underwent two simultaneous surgeries. First, Doctor Musayev performed surgery to address the aortic aneurysm and replaced the aorta with an artificial graft. Following this, transplant specialist Tariyel Nadirov transplanted a kidney donated by the patient's spouse onto the artificial graft. Notably, the transplanted kidney had two arteries, each anastomosed separately to the artificial graft, with the vein anastomosed to the inferior vena cava. Urine output from the transplanted kidney began on the operating table.

One week post-operation, the patient's condition and creatinine levels were reported as normal. The patient was discharged home with necessary post-operative recommendations.
