TBILISI: The Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has raised concerns over what he describes as preparations for an unconstitutional change of government. In a statement, Papuashvili criticized the opposition’s lack of pre-election campaigning and alleged foreign interference in the nation’s electoral process.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Papuashvili expressed his concerns during an appearance on Imedi TV, where he questioned the opposition’s absence from the regions and their failure to engage with citizens. He claimed that the opposition’s campaign efforts are primarily conducted from abroad, with frequent announcements from foreign entities, which he described as direct interference in electoral matters.

Papuashvili further alleged that preparations are in progress for October 27, drawing parallels to what he referred to as a repeat attempt of events from 2020. He criticized the opposition and NGOs for not attending interdepartmental commission meetings coordinated by the M
inistry of Justice, which include international observers such as the OSCE/ODIHR. He argued that if the opposition had genuine complaints, they would present them at these meetings for investigation.

The Georgian Dream party, according to Papuashvili, is the only political entity actively campaigning and nominating delegates, contrasting with the opposition’s strategy of relying on media appearances and alleged foreign support. He urged citizens to be vigilant and participate actively in the electoral process as a means to counteract any foreign interference.
