Head of Investigation Department Requests Russian Cooperation on Yekaterinburg Incident

Baku: The head of the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Nemat Avazov, announced that a formal request has been sent to Russian agencies concerning recent events in Yekaterinburg. At a briefing, Avazov stated that no international requests or information had been received from Russian authorities regarding the killing of Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg to date.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Avazov emphasized the importance of investigating any incident involving a death that occurs within the premises or vehicles of state bodies conducting operational-search activities. He noted that relevant examinations have already been conducted in Russia, indicating that Russian authorities have commenced their investigation. Avazov highlighted that any instance of torture leading to death by an operational agency’s authorized person constitutes a particularly serious crime.

Avazov detailed that initial evidence and proof have been sent to Russian authorities in line with the 2002 Convention requirements. The request seeks the execution of investigative actions, submission of materials, necessary examinations, document collection, and inspections by Russian agencies. He expressed hope that the Russian colleagues would expedite their investigative and inquiry actions in compliance with the Convention’s requirements.

Efforts will continue to establish mutual contacts to ensure an objective investigation, aiming to identify and prosecute all guilty parties. Avazov reiterated the commitment to bring all responsible individuals to criminal responsibility.
