Italy, France and Germany are calling on the EU to impose ad hoc sanctions against Hamas and its supporters, the foreign ministers of the three nations wrote in a joint letter to the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, APA reports citing The Guardian.

‘We express our full support for the proposal to create an ad hoc sanctions regime against Hamas and its supporters,’ said the letter.

‘The swift adoption of this sanctions regime will enable us to send a strong political message about the EU’s commitment against Hamas and our solidarity with Israel,’ the letter said.

On Sunday, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he had criticised western leaders, telling his cabinet that they were being inconsistent with their support for Israel’s stated wa
r aim of destroying Hamas.

Briefing his cabinet, he said he had told the leaders of France, Germany and other countries: ‘You cannot on the one hand support the elimination of Hamas, and on the other pressure us to end the war, which would prevent the elimination of Hamas.’
