Kyiv: Ukraine midfielder Georgiy Sudakov has revealed that his apartment in Kyiv was severely damaged after being struck by a Russian drone while his wife and child were at home. Sudakov, 23, is presently on international duty with the Ukrainian national team and shared images and videos of the destruction on his Instagram account.

According to BBC, eyewitnesses in Kyiv reported seeing Shahed drones, which were mentioned by Sudakov in his post. BBC Verify successfully identified the location of the building housing Sudakov's apartment, situated to the southeast of the Svyatoshynskyi district in Kyiv. Verified media content depicted the upper floors of the building as severely damaged, with walls and windows demolished, and the remnants blackened and smoldering. Debris littered the surrounding street and vehicles parked nearby.

Sudakov, originally from Bryanka in the Donbas region currently under Russian occupation, transferred to the Portuguese club Benfica from Shakhtar Donetsk in August. He expressed the challenges of being a professional footballer during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, especially being separated from his family in Kyiv. In a BBC Sport interview last year, Sudakov described the psychological toll, noting how unsettling it is to wake up to messages from his wife about seeking shelter due to the conflict.

The footballer emphasized the sense of responsibility and pride felt by Ukrainian players representing their national team, aiming to uplift supporters during these trying times. Ukraine's national team is preparing for an upcoming World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, following a 2-0 defeat to France in their Group D opener.
