Leyla Aliyeva Engages with Traditional Mat-Weavers in Masalli

Masalli: Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the founder of the IDEA Public Union, visited the village of Musakucha in Azerbaijan's Masalli district to meet with women preserving the traditional craft of mat weaving.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Aliyeva interacted with participants involved in the 'Rooted Hands' project, a community dedicated to sustaining the age-old art of mat weaving. She explored their handmade creations and learned about their creative processes. The women of Musakucha village utilize natural reeds, which they collect and dry, to weave mats by hand, employing techniques passed down through generations. This craft is vital for maintaining the cultural heritage of the region and also supports women's employment and economic stability.

Aliyeva witnessed the mat-weaving process firsthand, expressing interest in the intricate details of the craft. During her visit, a short film about mat weaving and the 'Rooted Hands' project was screened. With Aliyeva's backing, a renovated space has been provided for these women, which will serve as a hub for workshops, training sessions, masterclasses, and the exhibition and sale of handmade products. This initiative aims to establish a new cultural and tourist spot in Masalli, while simultaneously boosting women's economic opportunities and safeguarding this traditional craft.

The 'Rooted Hands' project has begun to gain international attention. In 2025, it was featured at Milan Fashion Week as part of sustainable fashion initiatives. This highlighted the successful blend of natural materials from Azerbaijan's wetlands, the skill of women artisans, modern design, and traditional handicraft techniques. More information about the project can be found on its website and social media platforms.
