Pakistan Plays Key Role in US-Iran Tensions Mediation

Islamabad: Pakistan has emerged as a crucial facilitator in easing tensions between the United States and Iran, leveraging its unique geopolitical position and diplomatic ties to both nations. With a nearly 900-kilometer shared border with Iran and longstanding strategic partnerships with the United States and Gulf Arab states, Pakistan is uniquely positioned to maintain open lines of communication among these key players.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Imran Bhatti, a Pakistani cybersecurity and governance expert, highlighted Pakistan's historical role in mediating regionaal conflicts. Bhatti noted that Pakistan's approach is not to impose solutions but to reduce tensions sufficiently to enable dialogue. This strategy has been evident in Pakistan's mediation efforts in Afghanistan and its role in facilitating talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The current escalation between the US and Iran did not arise suddenly but followed a fragile interim arrangement reached in June. This agreement allowed for a 60-day period of technical talks, which both parties have accused each other of violating. The US points to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz as evidence of Iranian breaches, while Iran cites the re-imposition of oil sanctions and continued military pressure from Washington as proof of US non-compliance. Bhatti emphasized the importance of understanding the cyclical nature of unresolved conflicts, where defensive measures by one side are interpreted as offensive by the other, perpetuating the cycle of tension.

The expert concluded that Pakistan's most effective contribution to peace lies in sustained, patient, and quiet diplomacy, supported by multilateral engagement and a stable domestic economy.
