Baku: President Ilham Aliyev has addressed the participants of the Baku International Ombudsmen Summit on the theme "Human Rights in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Risks and Responsibilities," APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the address from President Aliyev highlighted the significance of holding the summit on June 18, which is Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan. This date is notable as it marks the day when the National Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, approved the country's inaugural State Programme on the Protection of Human Rights, establishing human rights protection as a key state policy priority.

President Aliyev emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence technologies on the social, economic, legal, and ethical agendas globally. He noted that while these technologies present new opportunities, they also bring new priorities, particularly in the human rights domain.

Azerbaijan, as highlighted by President Aliyev, prioritizes ensuring that technological advancements benefit human welfare. The country is undertaking significant measures to ensure the responsible and balanced application of innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence. Legal frameworks, concepts, and action plans have been adopted to ensure these technologies are implemented with security, transparency, and respect for human rights, while also supporting inclusive development and accelerating digital transformation.

The initiatives under Azerbaijan's new digital architecture, such as the expansion of artificial intelligence in public administration and the development of information security and national AI infrastructure, underscore the country's strategic approach to modern challenges.

Furthermore, President Aliyev pointed out that the recent 13th session of the United Nations World Urban Forum in Baku showcased Azerbaijan's contribution to international cooperation on sustainable development, digital governance, and human-centered urban environments.

In liberated territories, Azerbaijan is implementing 'smart city' and 'smart village' concepts, which combine artificial intelligence technologies and innovative solutions with environmental sustainability to improve human well-being, create a safe living environment, and support socio-economic reintegration.

President Aliyev also stressed the importance of institutional mechanisms and international cooperation in human rights protection, with national institutions like the ombudsman playing a crucial role in safeguarding human rights and promoting a human rights culture amid new technological challenges.

He expressed confidence that the International Baku Ombudsmen Summit would significantly contribute to expanding international cooperation, sharing best practices, and promoting innovative, human-centered governance mechanisms.

President Aliyev concluded by extending his greetings to the summit participants and wishing the summit success.
