President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva Commemorate Azerbaijani Heroes of World War II

Baku: President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva paid tribute to Azerbaijanis who lost their lives during World War II on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over fascism. The commemoration included a visit to the grave of Major General of Tank Troops Hazi Aslanov, a twice Hero of the Soviet Union. The President and First Lady laid flowers at his statue, honoring all Azerbaijani citizens who sacrificed their lives during the conflict.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Azerbaijan made a substantial contribution to the Victory over fascism. The nation sent 600,000 men and women to the frontlines, with more than 300,000 of them dying heroically in battle. Over 130 Azerbaijani individuals were recognized as Heroes of the Soviet Union for their wartime bravery, and more than 170,000 soldiers and officers received various orders and medals. Azerbaijani divisions fought from the Caucasus to Berlin, with many joining guerrilla groups. Crucially, Azerbaijani oil supplied the Soviet army with the majority of its fuel needs.

The heroism of Azerbaijani soldiers has been honored continuously. National Leader Heydar Aliyev prioritized the welfare of war veterans, referring to them as ‘the golden fund of our people’. President Ilham Aliyev continues this legacy by addressing the social needs of veterans, recently providing financial assistance to them on Victory Day. A presidential order dated April 21, 2025, granted 2,500 manats to veterans of the 1941-1945 war, while other eligible groups received 1,250 manats, demonstrating the state’s commitment to supporting its veterans.

Azerbaijan celebrates the Victory over fascism with increased pride each year, especially following its recent success in the 44-day Patriotic War, which restored its territorial integrity. The nation continues to honor the memory of those who died for its sovereignty and territorial integrity, ensuring their sacrifices are remembered.

President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva’s tribute underscores the enduring respect and gratitude the nation holds for its wartime heroes, as reported by APA.
