Nakhchivan: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev along with First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva reviewed the 'Master Plan for the Development of Nakhchivan City until 2044', APA reports. Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, presented insights on the Master Plan, which outlines future development goals and proposed projects for the city.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Master Plan was crafted by the 'Azermemarlayiha' Senior State Design Institute in collaboration with international consulting firm Chapman Taylor. This initiative was commissioned by the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture as part of the 'State Program for the Socio-Economic Development of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for 2023-2027.' The plan offers a strategic vision for Nakhchivan, emphasizing urban renewal, recreational expansion, sustainable mobility, and improved infrastructure.
The Master Plan focuses on transforming the central part of the city. It includes a detailed plan for a 74-hectare central district and an architectural concept for a 12.5-hectare area. The project aims to revitalize the city center by renovating or replacing outdated buildings with modern structures and establishing new public spaces. A new administrative complex and a transformed central square are also part of the vision, promoting a vibrant and accessible urban environment.
Environmental considerations are integral to the Master Plan, which will see an expansion of green spaces and integration of the Nakhchivanchay River area into urban life. The goal is to increase green space per capita significantly. Urban mobility plans include sustainable transport solutions with a comprehensive network of streets and bicycle infrastructure, making cycling accessible to over 65 percent of the road network.
The Master Plan leverages Nakhchivan's historical heritage and geographical advantages to boost tourism. By enhancing the service sector and urban environment, the plan aims to make the city more competitive in tourism. The city's residential area is also set to expand significantly, with a projected 44 percent increase in territory and a population growth to 130,000.
Residential development will keep pace with population growth, with housing stock projected to provide ample living space per capita. Social infrastructure will also expand, with increased capacity in education and healthcare facilities. Driven by growth in various sectors, employment is expected to rise by 40 percent.
By 2044, Nakhchivan is poised to become a dynamic hub within the Middle Corridor, blending historical heritage with modern urban planning to create a sustainable and inclusive regional center.
