President of Azerbaijan Announces 15 Million Tons Cargo Potential for Zangezur Corridor

Baku: ‘We estimate the initial potential of the Zangezur corridor at 15 million tons of cargo,’ said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev as he addressed the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum, APA reports. The president highlighted the strategic importance of the corridor in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting cargo transportation.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the president revealed that Azerbaijan is nearing the completion of the railway construction up to the junction with borders shared with Armenia and Iran. He projected that the Azerbaijani section of the railway would likely be completed in less than a year, possibly by the spring of next year.

President Aliyev emphasized that the implementation of the Zangezur corridor would effectively create an additional route for the North-South corridor. This new passage would not only facilitate movement from Russia through Azerbaijan to Iran but also extend through East Zangezur and other parts of the Zangezur region to Iran and further to Trkiye. This development is expected to significantly increase the volume of cargo transportation, offering new economic opportunities for the region.
