Public discussions on political prisoners in Azerbaijan and the implementation of the country’s government’s obligations to the Council of Europe are planned for May 17 at the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, according to sources in PACE.
Representatives of international NGOs, as well as Azerbaijani activists who are in political emigration are expected to participate in the debates.
Representative for political prisoners in Azerbaijan, Icelandic deputy Sunna Evarsdottir is expected to speak at the hearings.
According to human rights activists, even after the March pardon of the president, when about 40 political prisoners were released, over 100 people remain in Azerbaijan’s prisons, persecuted for their opposition activities and the implementation of their political and religious views.
