Sofia:A photo exhibition entitled 'The Architectural Heritage of Azerbaijan and Bulgaria Through the Eyes of Students' was unveiled at Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski' on October 5. This event marked World Habitat Day, World Architecture Day, and World Teachers' Day. Organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Bulgaria and the Centre for Azerbaijani Language and Culture of Baku Slavic University at Sofia University, the exhibition showcases the architecture, cultural heritage, and urban life of Azerbaijani and Bulgarian cities through the perspectives of young students.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the exhibition is part of Azerbaijan's declaration of 2026 as the 'Year of Urban Planning and Architecture' and celebrates the 900th anniversary of the prominent Azerbaijani architect Ajami Nakhchivani. The event was attended by notable figures including Milena Dimitrova, Secretary to the President of Bulgaria for Culture and Education, and Assoc. Prof. Simeon Groysman, Vice-Rector of Sofia University, among others. Elmar Mammadzade, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Bulgaria, highlighted the significance of cities as spaces that unite people, history, culture, and the future, with young people and teachers playing a crucial role in shaping that future.
The exhibition also emphasizes the cooperation between the twinned cities of Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, such as Ganja and Varna, which strengthens people-to-people ties and fosters dialogue among young people. Ambassador Mammadzade briefed attendees on Azerbaijan's urban transformation and reconstruction projects, particularly in the liberated Garabagh and East Zangezur regions, and the ongoing efforts to address landmine threats and implement infrastructure projects.
In his speech, Assoc. Prof. Groysman noted that the exhibition provides an opportunity to appreciate the architectural heritage of both countries while reflecting on their cultural ties. Sofia Shigayeva-Mitreska, Director of the Centre, emphasized the project's goal of having students actively participate in cultural dialogue by photographing architectural landmarks in each other’s countries.
The exhibition aims to further cultural and educational cooperation between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria and strengthen ties through urban development and youth engagement.
