ASTANA: South Korean energy company Doosan Enerbility is set to expand its presence in Kazakhstan with the establishment of a representative office in the capital city, Astana. This move comes as part of a broader agreement between Doosan and Kazakhstan, aiming to localize energy equipment production and train Kazakh personnel.

According to Trend News Agency, the announcement was made during an official visit by a Kazakh delegation led by Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev to South Korea. The visit, which took place from October 22 to 25, included negotiations that resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Kazakh Ministry of Energy and Doosan Enerbility. The agreement encompasses plans to set up a Doosan representative office in Astana and engage in collaborative energy projects.

During the visit, Minister Satkaliyev held discussions with representatives from major Korean energy companies and government officials, focusing on potential partnerships in the nuclear sector. Korean
officials took the opportunity to congratulate Kazakhstan on a successful referendum supporting the construction of its first nuclear power plant.

In addition to nuclear energy, Minister Satkaliyev explored cooperation in oil, gas, and renewable energy projects with South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy. Discussions included prominent companies such as Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC), and Samsung C and T.

Currently, Doosan Enerbility is involved in constructing a 1,000 MW gas power plant in Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region. The company is also collaborating with KEPCO KPS to conduct a technical assessment of Kazakhstan’s energy infrastructure, focusing on emission reduction and extending the lifespan of existing power plants.
