BAKU — During an international conference marking the Baku Climate Action Week, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva emphasized the event’s critical role in shaping the agenda for the forthcoming COP29 conference.
According to Trend News Agency, Andreeva outlined Azerbaijan’s significant efforts in mobilizing stakeholders across various sectors to address climate change challenges, in partnership with the UN, the government, and the broader community. “Azerbaijan’s announcement as the host of the COP29 conference followed with the active mobilization of representatives from various sectors to combat climate change. In this process, Azerbaijan is working closely with the UN, the COP29 Presidency Team, the government, civil society, development partners, the scientific community, and youth,” she stated.
The Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024), scheduled for September 30 to October 4, 2024, will be a first-of-its-kind event in the city and aims to lay a solid foundation for the climate discussions at COP29 in November. The week is designed to integrate a broad spectrum of participants, including political figures, financiers, traders, investors, scientists, cultural leaders, and media representatives. Andreeva specifically highlighted the ’29 Climate Talks’, a flagship project featuring leading experts, as a key initiative leading up to the summit.
The agenda for the week is segmented into two phases: The first, from September 30 to October 2, will focus on climate solutions involving government agencies, academia, and the private sector. The subsequent phase, on October 3 and 4, will emphasize contributions from science, education, arts, and culture. The main themes of BCAW 2024 will cover ‘energy transition,’ ‘cities and urbanized environments,’ ‘water security,’ ‘food and agriculture,’ ‘SMEs,’ and ‘green skills.’
