UNDP Deputy Director Calls for Housing to Be Viewed as a Social Function

Baku: "In some countries, investments are directed only toward high-income housing, leaving displaced communities and small towns behind," said Francine Pickup, UNDP Deputy Director of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, during a session titled 'The Social and Economic Power of Housing: How Can Housing Drive Prosperity While Delivering Equity for All?' held as part of WUF13.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Francine Pickup emphasized the need to regard housing as a social function and a matter of critical importance. She highlighted that housing provides access to essential services, including healthcare and employment opportunities, urging a shift in investment strategies to ensure inclusivity and equity in housing development.

The session underscored the role of housing in promoting both social and economic prosperity, advocating for policy changes that prioritize the needs of underrepresented communities. By addressing the housing gap, particularly for displaced individuals and smaller towns, the UNDP aims to foster environments where all individuals can thrive and access essential services. Francine Pickup's remarks call for a reevaluation of current housing policies, stressing that equitable access to housing is crucial for sustainable development.
