Washington: Today marks the first anniversary of the historic Washington Summit, hosted by the United States on 8 August 2025, which laid the foundation for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The summit has been pivotal in transforming relations between the two nations, setting a new course towards reconciliation and cooperation in the South Caucasus.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the summit, held under the leadership of the then-President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was instrumental in ending a conflict that spanned three decades. The event culminated in the signing of the Trilateral Joint Declaration at the White House, the Agreement on Peace, and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. These agreements have played a crucial role in securing lasting peace and stability in the region, facilitating sustainable development and cooperation.
One of the notable outcomes of the summit was the launch of the TRIPP project, which aims to enhance regional transport connectivity and advance multilateral economic cooperation. The project is expected to ensure peace and security in the South Caucasus, further solidifying the peacebuilding efforts initiated during the summit.
In the year since the summit, Azerbaijani society has embraced the new peaceful environment. Several measures have been implemented to improve relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including the lifting of transportation restrictions on cargo from Azerbaijan to Armenia. Azerbaijani petroleum products, alongside grain and other goods from third countries, are now being transported through Azerbaijan for export to Armenia, demonstrating the tangible economic benefits of peace.
The Washington Summit also marked a significant milestone in Azerbaijan-United States bilateral relations. The meeting paved the way for a new stage of strategic partnership, highlighted by the visit of Vice President JD Vance to Azerbaijan and the signing of the Strategic Partnership Charter. This charter covers areas such as mutual investment, trade, energy, and security, reflecting the progress achieved in Azerbaijan-United States relations.
Additionally, the decision to extend the waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act has been viewed as a step toward restoring historical justice, further strengthening the ties between the two countries.
The achievements of the past year underscore the transformation in Azerbaijan-United States relations, reaching their highest point in the 34-year history of diplomatic relations. The commitment to further expanding the friendship, strategic partnership, and mutual trust between the nations remains strong, with hopes of continued cooperation in the future.
