Baku:An event titled 'Women in the History of Azerbaijan's Parliamentarism' showcased the pivotal role women have played in the country's parliamentary history.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Ramin Rzayev, Director of the Baku branch of the IPA CIS International Institute for Monitoring Democracy Development, highlighted that the 1995 Constitution of Azerbaijan, crafted under Heydar Aliyev's leadership, established the legal foundation for gender policy in the nation. This policy, aimed at safeguarding women's rights and boosting their participation in public and political spheres, continues under President Ilham Aliyev.
Ivan Mushket, Deputy Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat, noted the extensive research conducted on Azerbaijani parliamentarism, culminating in the book 'Women in the History of Parliamentarism.'
Jala Aliyeva, Deputy Chair of the Milli Majlis Committee on Family, Women and Children's Affairs, reported that female representation in the parliament has increased from 11% in 2005 to 21% in the current convocation, with 26 out of 125 members being women.
Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Bahrom Ashrafkhanov, praised the contributions of female MPs, and discussions at the event explored women's historical roles in parliament, their societal contributions, and gender-related issues.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony for schoolchildren who participated in an essay competition on 'The Role of Azerbaijani Women in State and Society Building.'
