50 Suspected Gang Members Killed in Attack on Haiti’s Arcahaie

PORT-AU-PRINCE: At least 50 suspected gang members were killed during an attack on the western coastal city of Arcahaie, Haiti, authorities reported. The majority were shot by police, while others drowned when their ammunition-laden boat capsized after striking a reef. The ongoing violence highlights the escalating security crisis in the region.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the assault on Arcahaie began on October 21, with armed assailants initially hiding in surrounding areas. Wilner Rene, an official from Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency, informed Radio Caraibes that police discovered the attackers, prompting a confrontation that resulted in significant casualties. The police have since expressed an urgent need for reinforcements as the assault continues.

The attack on Arcahaie is part of a wider surge in violence that has plagued Haiti in recent years, fueled by a growing political and social crisis. The assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 created a power vacuum, allowing armed gangs
to exert control over large portions of urban areas, particularly in Port-au-Prince.

This instability, coupled with shortages of basic resources, has displaced over 700,000 people and led to thousands of deaths, exacerbating Haiti’s humanitarian crisis. As the violence persists, the need for international support and intervention becomes increasingly critical.
