Baku: Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has reported a 5% increase in passenger traffic during the first half of 2026 as it expanded its route network and upgraded its fleet with new-generation aircraft. Throughout this period, the airline also enhanced its digital services and developed international partnerships, according to AZAL's statement to APA-Economics.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, AZAL served 1.9 million passengers, with 1.6 million flying internationally, and operated 8,462 flights, including 6,566 international services, during the reporting period. The airline achieved an average load factor of 79% and an on-time performance rate of 81%, indicating robust operational performance.
In its efforts to broaden its route network, AZAL launched direct flights to Shymkent and initiated ticket sales for new routes to Aktobe, Atyrau, and Brussels. By the end of the first six months, the airline's scheduled route network had expanded to 52 destinations, with Moscow, Istanbul, Tbilisi, Tel Aviv, and Ankara being the most popular among passengers.
The fleet of Azerbaijan's national carrier was bolstered with the addition of three new-generation Airbus aircraft, including two Airbus A320neo planes and the airline's first Airbus A321neo, increasing the total number of aircraft to 29. The Baku-Nakhchivan-Baku route remained one of the busiest domestic services, with 1,868 flights carrying 367,651 passengers, and a record 25 flights operated on the busiest day.
To improve passenger experience and expand digital services, AZAL introduced several new initiatives, such as increasing the online baggage allowance to 32 kg, offering a Stopover service during online ticket purchases, and launching a Rental Car service. The airline also integrated payment systems Alipay and WeChat Pay for Chinese passengers and HUMO and UZCARD for Uzbekistani citizens. Additionally, exclusive roaming packages were introduced in partnership with Bakcell.
During this period, AZAL maintained the continuity of its operations with a steadfast commitment to flight safety as its top priority.
