BAKU-Azerbaijan is set to introduce significant initiatives aimed at advancing the global energy transition:zerbaijan is set to introduce significant initiatives aimed at advancing the global energy transition, as detailed by Elnur Soltanov, Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Energy and COP29 Executive Director, in an exclusive interview with Trend News Agency. The initiatives include development in hydrogen energy, green energy zones, and global energy storage networks. According to Trend News Agency, Soltanov highlighted the drafting of a hydrogen declaration at COP29 that seeks to unify global strategies on hydrogen energy. This declaration will focus on hydrogen certification, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between different types of hydrogen based on their production emissions. Green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources and emits no greenhouse gases, will be distinguished from other types such as black, gray, blue, turquoise, pink, and white hydrogen, each defined by the ir production process and environmental impact. In his role as the chair of COP29, Soltanov revealed that Azerbaijan is pushing forward fourteen initiatives, with three major projects designed to support achieving net-zero emissions in the energy sector and accelerating the energy transition. These are "Green Energy Zones and Corridors," "Global Energy Storage and Networks," and the "Hydrogen Declaration." He also noted that Azerbaijan has intensified efforts to build storage capacities for green energy, with an initial phase involving 250 MW. This development is overseen by Azerenerji OJSC, with collaboration from ACWA Power, which will assist in creating a 200 MW energy storage facility. Soltanov recalled the International Energy Agency's assessment, which supports the "Global Energy Storage and Networks" declaration, indicating a need for a sixfold increase in global energy storage capacities to stabilize and balance energy supply. Moreover, he mentioned ongoing plans under the "Green Energy Zones and Co rridors" initiative, which will include the presentation of several projects and the signing of contracts with local and international companies. This November, Baku will host COP29, following its selection during the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai last December. The conference is expected to draw approximately 70-80,000 international delegates, focusing on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an agreement aimed at preventing hazardous human interference with the climate system.
