Azerbaijan Celebrates Eid al-Adha with Religious Observance and Sacrificial Traditions

Baku: Today marks Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) in Azerbaijan, APA reports. Eid al-Adha is celebrated in the country on May 27-28. This year's fatwa from the Council of Qazis of the Caucasian Muslims' Office confirms the date of Eid al-Fitr as May 27, as agreed upon by the Council of Religious Heads of the Turkic States Organization on May 18, 2026. In accordance with Sharia, the Qurban slaughter can last for three days starting from May 27. According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Eid prayers will be performed in mosques across the country on May 27. The Ajderbay Mosque in Baku will host prayers at 8:00 a.m., while the Tazapir Mosque will hold them at 9:00 a.m. The fatwa indicates that sheep are usually preferred for sacrifice, although goats, cows, and camels are also permissible. While everyone is free to distribute the meat as they see fit, Islamic teachings emphasize aiding the needy as being closer to the spirit of religion. To honor the occasion, there will be five consecutive non-working days-Ma y 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31-coinciding with Eid al-Adha and Independence Day.
