Adsea: Azerbaijan is witnessing a significant rise in the frequency of floods, with numbers increasing several times from the previous annual count of 10-20 incidents.
Extreme weather events such as floods, flash floods, and heavy rainfall are becoming more frequent and severe each year, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA), Khayyam Mammadov, announced during the 'Early Warnings and Sustainable Cities' event at the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku. Mammadov highlighted the detrimental impact these events have on infrastructure, the economy, and the quality of life for citizens.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Mammadov emphasized the urgent need for adaptation to combat the risks posed by climate change, especially in the water sector, which is significantly affected. He noted that the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency is actively working in accordance with the national water strategy and other state development programs to bolster climate resilience. These efforts are in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals concerning clean water, climate action, and environmental protection.
Mammadov also mentioned that Azerbaijan's initiatives are consistent with the resolutions made during COP29, which Azerbaijan hosted in 2024. Additionally, the agency is preparing new adaptation projects in collaboration with state institutions, international organizations, and private companies for the upcoming COP31 scheduled in Antalya in 2026.
