Azerbaijan Railways Highlights Need for Enhanced Regional Coordination for Middle Corridor

Vienna: Arif Aghayev, the deputy chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY), participated in the Regional Railway Seminar in Vienna, Austria, organized by the World Bank, as reported by ADY to APA-Economics. During the 'Country Perspectives: Prospects and Challenges for Railways in the Current Geopolitical Environment' session, Aghayev shared insights into Azerbaijan's standing in regional connectivity and the potential growth of the Middle Corridor. He also discussed major ongoing domestic projects and ADY's strategic vision amidst the current geopolitical conditions.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Aghayev highlighted Azerbaijan's enhanced role as a key transit hub in Eurasia, strategically positioned at the crossroads of the East-West and North-South transport corridors. He stressed the necessity for stronger regional coordination to ensure a sustainable Middle Corridor. Under the current geopolitical climate, collaboration within the frameworks of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and the Eurasian Transport Route International Association has grown, facilitating coordinated, sustainable, and digital connectivity. This includes the acceleration of electronic document exchange and data integration with Kazakhstan and China.

Recent efforts by ADY to boost transit capacity along Azerbaijan's section of the Middle Corridor have been significant, particularly through the adoption of digital solutions to reduce transit times. In 2025, the number of block trains received in the East-West direction increased by 37% compared to 2024, totaling 392. Additionally, container turnover at the Port of Baku exceeded 100,000 TEU in 2025, marking a record achievement.

Further initiatives are underway to enhance corridor capacity, increase the annual cargo handling capacity of the Port of Baku to 260,000 TEU, and streamline border-crossing procedures.
