Azerbaijan Reaffirms Commitment to Peace with Armenia, Says Elchin Amirbayov

BAKU - Elchin Amirbayov, Special Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Special Assignments, recently underscored Azerbaijan's dedication to forging a lasting peace agreement with Armenia, highlighting the current pivotal stage of bilateral talks aimed at resolving longstanding tensions between the two nations.

According to Trend News Agency, in a detailed interview with writer and historian Carlo Marino, Amirbayov expressed gratitude towards the Holy See for its support of Azerbaijan’s peace agenda, which seeks to normalize relations with Armenia. "We are grateful to the Holy See for its interest in this topic and for supporting the peace agenda presented by Azerbaijan to normalize relations with our neighbors, the Armenians," Amirbayov stated. He emphasized that Azerbaijan's primary goal is to finalize a peace agreement that forecloses any possibility of future territorial disputes or military conflicts.

Amirbayov further explained that achieving a credible and irreversible peace requires addressing certain fundamental issues, notably Armenia's constitutional claim to Azerbaijani territory. He criticized Armenia's approach to the peace negotiations, suggesting that Armenia was overlooking significant barriers to peace by seeking to quickly sign an agreement without adequately addressing these underlying issues. "Armenia must urgently address the obvious territorial claim embedded in its current Constitution regarding a part of Azerbaijan's sovereign territory," he added.

The Azerbaijani official concluded by stressing the importance of Armenia recognizing and addressing these critical obstacles to facilitate a genuine and sustainable resolution. "The ball is now in Armenia's court, and we hope that this historic opportunity to turn the page is not wasted," he said, highlighting the urgency and significance of the current negotiations.
