Geneva: Sabina Aliyeva, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participated in an event focused on the 'Role of NHRIs in Promoting and Protecting Human Rights in the Digital Space' during the GANHRI Annual Meeting in Geneva. Aliyeva discussed Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts to enhance digitalization and its impact on human rights protection.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Aliyeva highlighted the importance of prioritizing human rights protection in the digital era, noting that significant recommendations have been proposed for inclusion in the 2025 Annual Report. These recommendations aim to bolster the effective protection of human rights in a digitalized context.
A significant part of the annual meeting included a side event titled 'Protection of Child Rights in the Digital Age: Practical Approaches of the NHRI of Azerbaijan,' initiated by Aliyeva. Representatives from countries such as Trkiye, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and others, along with diplomatic missions in Geneva, attended. Aliyeva emphasized that protecting children's rights is a priority in her work, with special attention to digital safety concerns.
The Ombudsman detailed her monitoring activities regarding child rights protection and outlined the challenges and recommendations related to the digital environment. She mentioned collaborations with state institutions and civil groups in Azerbaijan, organizing awareness campaigns for children about safe internet usage and digital risks.
Aliyeva also highlighted international cooperation on children's rights, noting regular experience exchanges within the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children. During the event, Jasminka D‚¬Å¡¬€¦¡¬¦¾umhur, the Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina, discussed international practices and achievements in child rights protection.
Additionally, Debbie Kohner, Secretary-General of the ENNHRI, and Robert Dobrovodsk½, Ombudsman of Slovakia, shared insights on the NHRI's role in protecting children's rights in the digital realm. Nuriye Mammadova, from the Ombudsman Office, presented on Azerbaijan's practical approaches to child rights protection in the digital space, showcasing positive practices.
An awareness-raising video on children's digital protection was also presented, followed by a discussion and Q and A session with participants.
